Augusta reaches stopgap deal for ambulance service

AUGUSTA, Ga. (WRDW/WAGT) - A day after city leaders rejected a contract with the city’s ambulance service provider, they went to a month-to-month short-term deal with the company to avoid a gap in service.

The Augusta Commission unanimously approved a month-by-month deal with Gold Cross Emergency Medical Services. It would cost $250,000 at first, then $150,000 each subsequent month.

The money source will continue to be American Rescue Plan funds.

Not everything is ironed out just yet. The start time is uncertain but soon. Plus city leaders will need to check with attorneys to see if the deal is legal to proceed with.

The month-to-month deal with Gold Cross will expire upon designation of a new provider by the state and when that provider is ready to start.

The decision came during an emergency meeting of the commission that began at 3 p.m. Wednesday.

The commission on Tuesday voted down a contract with Gold Cross after the company sought substantial subsidies – on the order of an initial $2 million, then $2 million more per year – from the city to continue operating here. Gold Cross blamed rising costs and the number of patients who don’t pay.

Gold Cross has already surrendered its emergency medical services zone, and its responsibilities will end Jan. 31.

The state will not allow the city to go without an EMS provider, Mayor Garnett Johnson said, so state-supported service providers will be designated for Augusta, most likely from multiple parts of the state.

“We need to be able to provide accountable ambulance service as people call 911. They have to have confidence that they’re going to be responded to in a timely manner. Right now, we don’t have a plan,” Johnson said after Tuesday’s decision.

Steven Vincent with Gold Cross says the zone can only be open for 10 days and then it closes. That may not be enough time for lengthy negotiations with a potential new provider.

And that’s where the short-term deal may help out.

Augusta does not have the resources right now to essentially operate on its own without an EMS provider.

But many wonder if the Augusta Fire Department could someday take on the role of Richmond County’s primary EMS provider as it has in the past.

The Augusta Professional Firefighters Association tells us while it’s not out of the question, there is a lot of work to be done before the organization commits.

The group said in a statement that leaders hoped an agreement could be reached with Gold Cross.

“Unfortunately, that was not the case and is cause for concern,” the statement said. “We will continue support the ongoing efforts resolve this issue and assist in anyway possible to ensure proper and professional EMS services for the citizens of Augusta.”

The group says it would support an emergency medical service run by the Augusta Fire Department only if it was a separate division within the department.

“The previous administration’s attempt to integrate the two fundamentally different services clearly illustrated the issues of staffing, funding, and recruitment that each division faces,” the group said. “We are just now overcoming the ramifications of that particular ill advised decision.”

The group says it lost 300 employees the last time this happened in a field already struggling to recruit and retain staff.

One of the biggest concerns of the group is an effect on fire response if a separate division of the department isn’t created specifically for emergency medical services.

Even in the depths of winter the golf hot stove has remained warm thanks to multiple legal clashes. Recent court documents filed by the PGA Tour and LIV Golf show how intertwined (or not!) the fight in pro golf’s upper ranks has been.

According to court documents released Monday, LIV Golf’s lawyers have served subpoenas to six current or former PGA Tour policy board directors as well as former commissioner Tim Finchem. Buried in a joint statement between LIV and those directors were allegations lobbed by LIV against various members of Augusta National, which seems to be one of LIV’s new focuses. One of the initial requests included in each subpoena to those members was an overarching demand:

Please produce “All Communications between You and any member of Augusta National relating to a New Tour, including but not limited to LIV Golf.”

Much of the allegations in the statement remain confidential, but ANGC members Condoleezza Rice — the former Secretary of State — and Warren Stephens were listed by LIV as having “apparently attempted to influence the DOJ (Department of Justice) to not investigate the [PGA] Tour.” Whether or not that is true — the complaints flying back and forth are highly contested by each side — the DOJ has launched an investigation into the PGA Tour for potential anti-competitive practices, as it has also done with both the USGA and Augusta National.

While many of the allegations in the documents were redacted, LIV continued to characterize the Tour’s work as an “us or them campaign,” adding, “Indeed, the threat of a change in relationship with Augusta’s members was used as a stick to discourage one of the top golfers in the world from joining LIV.”

The lawsuit is an antitrust case wherein LIV has accused the PGA Tour of organizing a “group boycott” with other governing bodies like Augusta National, the DP World Tour, the PGA of America, the USGA and the R&A. Within its initial complaint, LIV alleged that representatives from Augusta National launched an anti-LIV campaign, threatening to disinvite LIV players from future Masters tournaments if they joined the upstart league.

The PGA Tour policy board directors collectively made their case as well in the joint statement. The group is Ed Herlihy (policy board chairman), Mary Meeker, Mark Flaherty, Randall Stephenson, former director Victor Ganzi and former commissioner Finchem. (Meeker’s name led the statement because she is a California resident, where the lawsuit has been filed.) LIV’s theory that the Tour “seeded doubt” among top golfers that they’d be banned “is entirely baseless as demonstrated by the fact that the Masters has allowed LIV golfers to compete in the 2023 Masters,” the subpoenaed party statement read. It was just one month ago that Augusta National chairman Fred Ridley announced that any players already qualified for the 2023 tournament would be invited to play.

Just because LIV has served subpoenas to these Tour-adjacent people doesn’t mean they will receive all of the documents they desire. As part of the joint statement, LIV’s reduced its initial request for communications from the Augusta National membership of “approximately 300” to a narrower list of 21 individuals and the Masters Tournament Committee.

The policy board directors think that list is is still too broad, requesting in the documents that the group further be trimmed to just 11 names. The 11 that both sides have agreed upon are Ridley, Will Jones, Casey Coffman, Steve Ethun, Buzzy Johnson, Taylor Glover, Pat Battle, Terry McGuirk, Brian Roberts, Kessel Stelling and Lee Styslinger. Four of those are ANGC employees and seven are members. Among the others on LIV’s choice list: Rice, former chairman Billy Payne and new policy board director Jimmy Dunne.

LIV’s list is too broad, the directors argue, because many members of the Masters Committee do not hold positions of any relevance to the case. Many of them handle issues like Masters concessions, tee and hole locations, parking and traffic, etc. They note that much of the evidence LIV cites is because “there are many people who dislike LIV Golf, LIV’s Saudi backers and what they stand for, and that some of those individuals have chosen to share their personal opinions about LIV with professional golfers and others.”

So, where does it leave us? Judge Susan van Keulen will be expected to rule soon on just which Augusta National members can be included in the discovery efforts via the subpoenas. And just because they’ll be included does not mean the lawsuit will be loaded with communication documents. Augusta National and its members are famously tight-lipped about all operations involving the club.

AUGUSTA, Ga. (WJBF) – Students part of AU’s online Pediatric Nursing program can call themselves number one after being ranked the top program by Nurse Practitioner Online.

Five institutions from across the country are being recognized for their online Pediatric Nurse Practitioner programs. On top of all of them, is Augusta University.

“I think it’s wonderful– again– with the small cohorts, we’ve been able to develop and keep a strong program,” Chair of DNP Dept. Michelle Cox-Henley said.

Nurse Practitioner students use their didactic courses for “textbook” learning.

“The advantage of having the didactic component– online– is that the students can do the course material from home, they can work at their own pace, they can reach out to other classmates, within the learning center; within what we call ‘My Learning Platform,’” Cox-Henley said.

The selection was made based on a series of requirements like the size of the university’s nursing program, graduation and completion rate, and more.

“They were looking at schools that, number one, were academically strong programs, that had been established for a very long period of time, that were a synchronous material– at least part of the program because that’s really important to the new generation of nurses,” Cox-Henley said.

But Chair of the Doctor of Nursing Practitioner Department, Michelle Cox-Henley tells us the students’ learning extends beyond an online course.

“Then we have two other components which is simulation. We have a wonderful simulation lab here that we share with the dental and medical students across campus– and in the simulation lab, students actually get to develop their clinical skills using mannequins.”

Cox-Henley says the need for Pediatric Nurse Practitioners is important.

“Raising up strong nurses that can provide care, not only in the hospital setting, but in the community setting where these children are gonna be discharged to, right? The children are our future, and we want strong, healthy minds; strong, healthy children. So, we’re just very excited to be a part of that.”

Program directors say they’re thankful for the rating and that from this, the program will only continue to grow.

Sometimes when people do good, we forget to tell them how proud we are of them.

There are so many caring, hardworking and selfless people out there that get overshadowed by all the spewing of negativity entrenched in daily life. At our office, we have a fantastic staff that works tirelessly to make sure that Richmond County Extension is doing as much as we can to positively impact our local citizens’ lives. I don’t tell them enough how proud I am of them.

Our office also is the home base for about 140 active Extension volunteers that amaze me on the amount of work they do to help with an endless list of projects throughout the CSRA. I could fill an entire newspaper with all of the ways the group of volunteers associated with Richmond (and Columbia, Lincoln, Aiken) County Extension takes their personal time and invests back into making a better community.

It is not fair to single one person or group of people out for how much volunteer work is done because so much effort is done behind the scenes that I never see. But in the past couple of weeks, I have had a little more time to get more intimately involved in a few projects where our groups of volunteers have been diligently working and they deserve some serious accolades.

One of our projects where our volunteers are regularly involved is Lynndale Inc.

Lynndale is a community support service that helps adults with disabilities access employment and community resources, develop life skills, and participate in group and individual activities. I met Greg and Tracy over there this week to help with pruning some overgrown trees and shrubs. The G and T team came prepared with their own saws, ladders, tarps, trucks, gloves and pickup truck. We tackled the first of many overgrown crape myrtles in a couple of hours and I then went to look around in the onsite Lynndale greenhouse.

When I walked in, there were four of our Extension volunteers working in the greenhouse that I had no idea were visiting that day. They are there regularly making sure the greenhouse plants are staying healthy and I was happy for them to give me a tour.

Lynndale was one of three locations that Team Greg and Tracy busted out a bunch of hard manual labor in the past week. They were seen at Pendleton King Park working in the Hydrangea garden and also working in another one of my favorite places in Augusta, the Vineyard Giving Farm.

My buddy and UGA Master Gardener, Elliot Price, started Vineyard Giving Garden on Parrish Road with some energy, vision and a lot of folks willing to help.

Elliot teamed up with Vineyard Church of Augusta to utilize a plot designated for a small gardening space and took this community garden into orbit. The garden is intended to grow fresh, wholesome produce to donate to Storehouse Food Pantry associated with Vineyard Church of Augusta. With the support of the church and donations from various organizations like Lowe’s, the Georgia Master Gardener Association and tons of super hard work from a pile of people, Elliot was able to accomplish his five-year plan for this garden in five months. Super volunteer, Linda S. sent me a report of the accomplishments of the Giving Garden from 2022. She sent me the report on what happened to be the third anniversary of the Giving Garden’s founding.

I was floored with the report. About 60 volunteers, of which 20 were Extension volunteers, logged 1,460 hours of volunteer work last year. The math says in 2022 at least one volunteer was in the Giving Garden every day of the year for four hours. And what were the results of all this volunteer work? Food donations directly from this garden to Storehouse Food Pantry was 1,375 lbs. Unbelievable.

Tracy called me the evening after we did the pruning at Lynndale to thank me for coming to help. I kept thinking to myself, I am the one that should be reaching out to you to thank you, and Greg, and all the ladies working in the Lynndale greenhouse, and Diane at Pendleton King Park, and Elliot and his 60+ volunteers that produce three-quarters of a ton of food for people in need.

To these people that volunteer to make our community a better place on their own time and most of the time on their own dime, a gigantic thank you. I am proud of you.

BY THE OWNERSHIP GROUP AND EMPLOYEES THAT ARE EMPLOYEED BY GOLD CROSS, THEY ARE OUR NEIGHBORS, THEIR DOLLARS FLOW BACK INTO OUR ECONOMY. IF WE CAN GET THEM TO THE SERVICE LEVELS WE EXPECT, I AM VERY OPEN TO CONTRACTING WITH GOLD CROSS TO COnTiNUE THE SERVICE.”

THE TIMELINE moving forward looks like this: the COMMITTEE MEETs TUESDAY, January 31st TO DISCUSS the EMS ZONE AS WELL AS MONTH TO MONTH CONTRACT. The mayor says says the commission has much to DISCUSS before SUBMITTING a PROPOSAL FOR THAT ZONE BETWEEN FEBRUARY 1ST AND FEBRUARY 10TH.
